Last night McBaby was practicing her crawling and standing and took a step! Then today, she took 7 steps then promptly sat down when she realized she was walking. It was cute, unceremonial and without a goal. All it took was holding onto the window ledge in out sitting room turned playstravaganza and moving a foot away from the wall. Then she moved another, and another. She was slow and thoughtful but effortless, like she was just moving her foot to steady herself. Hubby and I have been in no hurry for her to discover this advanced mobility (read: lazy butts don't want to seriously child proof) and while we've encouraged this development, we haven't gone out of our way.
Hugs and giggles filled the day as much as sighs and welled up tears. Getting teeth is not an easy feat. At just over 12 months old, she's rounding out her smile with 8 pearly chompers. Her favorite food lately has been raspberries. I figure they are cool and easy to eat but more nutritious than many other teething foods. The only down side is when they get wedged between her tummy and the high chair they leave nasty stains to discover later, leading me to momentarily believe she's bleeding. Egad.
So for the last time I can plan for a while, I hung out with my baby during the day. Chilling out, playing peekaboo, acting goofy, kissing a soft forehead that gets bumped often, dodging the toys that are swiped towards my face, and enjoying marveling at our brand new Christmas tree. It's our first, after 3 years in apartments with no room or money to get one. Now we just don't have money but plenty of space so we couldn't justify going a year longer without a tree.
Going back to work isn't going to be easy. The unexpected time home while seeking a job has been a true blessing. But leaving my little one at daycare last time was easier: she was less animated, less aware, and more baby. Saying "bye bye" to this munchkin in the morning may well test the strength of my water-proof mascara daily. Wish it luck.
